We do not live in a Disney movie but the disrespect and misuse continues.
Hopefully, this post shows you why we need to begin breeding modern dogs for modern households. It certainly emphasizes why dogs such as the French bulldog or Boston terrier are high ranking right now. Instead of trying to rescue every dog into a modern home while vilifying breeding, we need to come together as a society to intentionally breed and select for dogs that love modern homes. We have evolved, yet we have not evolved our companions to be with us.
I am a modern dog.
🔵 I am a Malinois.
I excel in just about everything and am internally driven to work constantly. I am bold, daring, and courageous.
A suburb family with kids adopts me and asks me to chill on the couch all day. I am not allowed to use my mouth on anyone or anything.

⚪️ I am a Pitbull.
My ancestors fought in gladiator rings. My extended relatives were bred to hunt wild bulls. My family was selected to win against dogs in the fighting pit at all costs.
A single mommy adopts me and expects me to cuddle with her toddler all day, then go for a walk in a neighborhood filled with other dogs.
🔴 I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were bred for hunting and fighting. I am considered a working dog in Japan and am often found doing police work.
A young college girl adopts me and constantly hugs and kisses me. I am expected to patiently wait for her return to our apartment.
⚫️ I am a Beagle.
I was designed to bay loudly through the forest while chasing prey so my hunters could find us. My senses allow me to catch even the slightest sign of a target.
A family in a packed neighborhood adopts me. They put an e-collar on my neck to silence me and jerk my leash when I try to dart after prey.
🔴 I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
My breed was selected to boldly hunt rats in the pitch dark mines and later to eradicate rats from farmland.
A middle aged woman adopts me. She carries me around all day and laughs when I viciously snarl at prey.
⚪️ I am a Great Pyrenees.
They selected my family to guard the other animals outside. I belong with the land, always watchful. My long coat keeps me warm. I feel best when I can see every direction and be next to my herd.
An apartment dwelling couple adopts me. They keep me in my own bedroom with one small window. I am expected to sit quietly at parties on the patio and come inside after a few minutes.
⚫️ I am a Labrador Retriever.
I was bred with boundless energy to retrieve prey for my hunters all day. I would love nothing more than to run through the forest or jump into the frigid lake to please my hunter.
A family adopts me and expects me to stay in a small, fenced yard. They yell at me when I mouth everything and only play catch with me for a few minutes.
🔵 I am a Jack Russell.
My family was bred to courageously fight. A fox, badger, raccoon, rat. I can take them all down. I can dig into their burrows and relentlessly hunt them.
A grandma adopts me to be her companion. She scolds me for chasing squirrels. I’m sent to the shelter after biting her newborn grandchild.
⚫️ I am a Siberian Husky.
My ancestors lived outside in severe weather and pulled heavy sleds for thousands of miles.
A young couple adopts me as a replacement baby. They put me in a harness but punish me for pulling. I endure hot summers but they only allow me to go outside during the winter for a few minutes to “protect” me from the cold.
🔴 I am a Dachshund.
My name literally means “badger dog.” My ancestors were bred to dig into burrows after prey. My body is perfectly designed to dig and burrow and my razor sharp teeth are made to snatch prey out for my hunters.
A family adopts me and brings me home to a big, fenced yard. They spend thousands trying to train me not to dig in their garden. I am punished when I bite the crawling baby.
⚪️ I am a Border Collie
I have one of the most complex canine brains as my family was bred for years to work 8 hour days outside with the herds and to follow multiple commands from my master perfectly.
A single man adopts me. He says he saved me, but he brings me home to an empty house and tells me to watch dog tv for 8 hours a day while he’s at work. I escape to herd cats and he yells at me.
🔴 I am a Chihuahua
My ancestors lived with the Aztecs as small dogs kept as companions or sold for food. I come from thousands of years of companion lines bred to harmlessly coexist with humans.
I am the most scapegoated breed. I exist for my purpose as my family has existed for millennia but I am called the most aggressive dog.
I am.
I am a modern dog.
I am:
So cute
Rescued
Tripod
Overweight
Obedient
Sit in a purse
Tolerate kissing
Submissively smile for the gram
Sit in a prison called a home
Endure hugs
Live in solitude all day
Ignore my instincts 24/7
I wish humans could see me as a domesticated animal who needs to express my selected genetic instincts.
I want them to realize I am not supposed to be sedentary all day while ignoring my breed characteristics.
I was not created to spend the work week politely in the back yard, dutifully greeting you when you get home and going for a brief walk on a leash before eating dry hunks of food and posing next to your #baby.
I am a #dog. My #genetics are real. My #sentience is proven. I deserve better.
Respectfully,
J.L. #DBA Editor
