As details continue to surface about the fatal pediatric dog attack in Canada, we are sadly identifying the victim as Kache Grist.

Kache was an 11 year old boy described as having a heart of gold. He enjoyed drawing comics and playing video games. His mom described him as a polite, loving boy.

For Easter break, he went to visit his biological dad. His dad had a roommate with two large dogs alleged to be Cane Corsi. This wouldn’t have been unusual to Kache as he lived around large dogs like Boxer/pits and Rhodesian Ridgebacks that were bred and sold.

Unfortunately, towards the end of the visit, the two dogs attacked and fatally mauled him. An autopsy report confirmed that the cause of death was due to dog bites.

To add to this horrific attack, it turns out the two dogs had multiple attack reports in the past, including a more recent one that was still open and being investigated by animal control.

This is a common finding in cases where dogs escalate to fatal maulings. It reflects a lack of accountability not only by the owners but also our basic social systems. Police, mandatory reporters, animal control officers, etc all refuse to take action until it’s too late.

Today, take away two points:

1. Remember innocent victims like Kache. Hug your loved ones today. Recognize that very little separates our own children from experiencing this horror.

2. Familiarize yourself with your local laws and the way your community enforces them. Show up to public meetings. Email, call, post on social media. Make it clear that apathetic behavior is not tolerated in your community and that you expect owners to be held accountable.

Respectfully,
