Robert Holguin, 53, lost his life on September 1, 2024, after being tragically mauled by three large, escaped dogs in East Oakland suspected to be Cane Corso and Neapolitan Mastiff mixes each weighing over 100 pounds.

Robert was homeless and residing in his vehicle near the dog owner’s property, a place he considered safe. When the dogs broke through the fence and attacked, he had no escape. In desperation, he tried to hide from them under the car but was unsuccessful. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Truth We Must Confront

These dogs had a known history of escaping and prior aggressive behavior. Despite this, the owner was released on his own recognizance after being charged under felony animal control laws.

Rest in Peace, Robert

Today, we honor Robert’s memory and the communities who now bear the weight of this avoidable tragedy. As we reflect, let us recommit to advocating for:

β€’ Stricter containment laws for powerful breeds known to cause catastrophic harm

β€’ Accountability for owners who fail to secure dogs with known dangerous propensities

β€’ Greater transparency from rescues and shelters about a dog’s history before adoption or transfer
