Say hello to #Cash. He lived for 9 years as a non working dog (household pet.) The family claims there was no prior violence and no warning sign before one day killing the 2 year old grandchild. Cash played with the 2 year old regularly and had played with him that very day.

Cash represents several important points we want parents to know when choosing a pet or choosing to allow their children around a pet:
1. Whatever breed label people want to call this dog, he is the expected type found in the medical literature associated with a higher risk of biting and more severe injuries from biting. Scientists are able to identify the visible, physical traits of dogs most likely to severely harm or kill your children. Those signs include a large, blocky head, large, wide jaws that provide the endearing smile many desire from pitbull type dogs, stocky shoulders, and a muscular build. This is the type identified as maiming and killing more pets, children, and adults than any other dog type.
2. Cash represents a subgroup we’ve been studying. For whatever reason, when #bloodsport#dogs#adopted as pets live peacefully for many years, their sudden attacks cluster around age 8-10. Cash was 9 years old when he randomly killed his playmate. The Bennard children were killed by 8 year old pitbulls as a well known example. And we continue to find consistent peaks of violence around 8-10 years in current cases, too. Genetic defects, aging brain issues, neurochemical or endocrine issues? Lots of theories exist for why this is consistently happening. But one point is clear…parents, you can own a cuddly #couchhippo for years. And one day it might kill your kids without warning.

3. Bloodsport breeds were designed to attack and to kill without giving you a warning sign. There’s a reason people report that they “snap” and start hurting pets and people. They were created to do that over decades of breeding. It gives them an advantage in the dog fighting pits. This is a common technique in human fighting, too. You don’t want your opponent to know your next move. You want to strike without warning. Bloodsport dogs were bred over hundreds of years to effectively strike without letting the other animal know ahead of time. That means pitbulls can show off their big jaws with a loving smile, cuddle up next to you, wiggle their bodies, and then bite whenever they are triggered. This is a different risk from dogs who are fearful and growl, lunge, or cower away from you as clear warning signs to leave them alone before biting.

Cash murdered his playmate without warning, a horrifying and unimaginable #tragedy. Yet it’s one that occurs predictably and repeatedly. Parents, PLEASE learn from others so that you don’t have to feel the soul crushing agony this family is going through right now (and forever.) The ideology behind rescuing dogs or rewriting the pitbull narrative does not serve anyone. It doesn’t serve the dogs as they are being placed into homes that don’t support their breed characteristics or needs. And it doesn’t serve the children, who can be killed within minutes on a random, normal day. #yourchildrenmatter
