Back in 2024, I started a series that felt important but was quickly overwhelming due to the sheer number of cases and the sensitivity of the details.
I started to highlight the number of child abuse and child fatality cases connected to high risk dog owners, but that didn’t occur from the actual dogs.
This is in line with all of the available studies on the topic. All of them found increased incidence of violence, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, animal abuse and neglect, substance use, etc compared to other populations.
I don’t think I can handle reinstating that series due to the sheer volume of cases and already being so behind on actual dog attacks.
But I felt this one was clear and worth sharing. This baby passed away due to unsafe sleeping practices with a parent who allegedly confessed to using substances. And tested positive. (Trial has not occurred yet and all persons are innocent until proven guilty.)
I noticed either way, this little baby was set against insurmountable odds. A pit was brought into the home with all the typical signs. #blurry #nails #mattress etc.
Months after her child passed away, she was celebrating this dog’s birthday. 🎂
There are so many serious layers to this topic that are worth reflecting on…the process of protecting children is one of breaking cycles of abuse and poverty, changing educational methods in our society, and altering our culture.
