Signs You’re Walking on Eggshells

#pfdba

• You constantly monitor your tone, words, or movements to avoid triggering a reaction

• You suppress normal activities like dancing, singing, or running to “keep the peace”

• You feel tension or anxiety before routine interactions

• You rehearse movements in advance to minimize conflict

• You accept behavior that makes you uncomfortable because addressing it feels unsafe

• You blame yourself for your dog’s emotional volatility

• You feel responsible for managing your dog’s reactions

• You avoid setting boundaries because of fear of escalation

• You experience relief when the dog is absent

• You second guess your own perceptions or instincts, relying on support groups to convince you to stay

• You adjust your behavior rather than expecting accountability

• You feel emotionally exhausted after basic tasks like taking a walk or feeding

• You sense that one wrong move could cause disproportionate fallout

Why this matters

Walking on eggshells is not a sign of sensitivity or compassion: it is a stress response to explosive unpredictability. Over time, it erodes confidence, judgment, and wellbeing.

Healthy relationships with people or animals do not require constant vigilance to prevent harm.

One response to “Walking on Eggshells Around Dogs”

  1. just had to put down my dog because he bit my child in the face (my child NEVER touches him) it happened at the feet of dad supervised . No warning signs.
I’ve had a trainer , I had them separate or supervised , gave my dog space but he started nipping early into my son crawling , then it was resource guarding , then we managed that well with training, then it was as simple as my dog being moody – put him in his space command. But if you for a second don’t look at him you’d miss his cues. I’ve been walking on eggshells and I still feel like I’m going to hell for putting my beautiful boy down for just being a dog. But I can’t let my son die from me wanting to continue to try to rehabilitate this dogs behavior.
